What counts as a cookie

A cookie is sent to the server with every request. This site sets cookies for one purpose, Google Analytics, and those are listed below. What the games themselves keep, your high scores and your sound setting, uses local storage instead, which stays in your browser and is never sent anywhere.

What the games store

All of it is local storage, all of it is prefixed spelvaro:, and none of it identifies you:

• spelvaro:best:<game> is your highest score, fewest moves, or fastest time in one game. Just a number.
• spelvaro:muted:<game> is whether you turned the sound off in that game. True or false.
• spelvaro:pref:<game> is the board size or difficulty you last picked, in the games that offer a choice.

All three are strictly functional. Without them the games still work, but your saved records would be lost and the sound would need muting again on each visit. They do not expire on their own. Clear site data for spelvaro.com and they go, along with your scores.

Analytics cookies

Google Analytics 4 is loaded from googletagmanager.com and sets two cookies on this domain. Neither holds your name, your email address, or anything you typed:

• _ga holds a random identifier so a return visit is not counted as a new one. It lasts two years.
• _ga_83DT0RFQV8 holds the state of the current session. It lasts two years.

These are not needed for the games to work. What they tell us is how many people visit and which games get opened, which is how we decide what to build next. What Google does with the data is covered by its own terms, and the privacy policy sets out the legal basis we rely on.

Third-party cookies

Google Analytics is the only third party a page contacts. Everything else a page needs, the fonts included, comes from spelvaro.com. No advertising network, social embed, comment widget, or video player is loaded.

How to remove what is stored

Clear site data for spelvaro.com in your browser's privacy or site settings panel. That removes the analytics cookies along with your saved high scores and your sound preference. To refuse analytics without clearing anything, use your browser's tracking protection, or Google's own opt-out add-on. Blocking third-party cookies alone will not stop _ga, because it is set on this domain rather than Google's.

Changes
